Hi, My name is Kate Amrine, I am 24 years old and I am the new horn line instructor for the NY Crimson Kings. I graduated from NYU with my Bachelors in Trumpet and recently finished up my Masters from Peabody Conservatory. I have played in several marching bands in NYC, from parades to random events and I am excited to join the Crimson Kings family! CK: Please describe your teaching style.
My teaching style is a combination of building strong fundamentals and technique while cultivating a supportive, creative, and experimental environment. I want them to be curious and excited about striving for more and learning new things, while working hard and pushing themselves forward.
CK: What immediate and long term goals are you setting for the horn line?
My immediate goals for the horn line involve getting some great practice habits in to refine technique and fundamentals — to make the music as familiar and comfortable as possible. I know they will feel great about playing the music with this solid background. Long term goals — I want them to be more individual self starters, with their own personal musical goals and interests that we address in the sectional time.
CK: What has been the most pleasant surprise so far with the Crimson Kings?
In the short time since I started, it has been amazing to see the strong marching skills and discipline in the Crimson Kings. It is such a tight community, with many of the members very young, so it is very inspiring to see that close-knit and hardworking environment.
CK: What do you hope to bring to the Corps?
I hope to bring in a newer perspective and outlook. As someone who hasn't had years of experience being in the horn line of a marching band, I know my background isn't the most standard but I plan to use my strong musical background through the teaching and freelancing I have done to the Corps and do everything I can to get the horn line sounding fantastic!
CK: What message would you like to say to the Corps?
I am so excited to work with you all and create something meaningful!
CK: What is your favorite thing about the drum corps activity?
The community - from what the Corps does for NYC, to what they do for each other - including the faculty members. Seeing everyone come in week after week and consistently trying to be the best they can be, while continuously raising those standards, is incredibly inspiring.
CK: If your students can take one thing away from being a part of a drum corps, what would you hope it to be?
These skills from being a musician to the discipline of marching and having a strong work ethic are all extremely important and will set you on a productive path to do whatever you want to do!
